Brian Taylor’s Mission to Make Firearms Training Safer and More Accessible with Precision Shooting Center
Chris Pederson interviews local Medina resident and veteran-turned entrepreneur
1. You’ve had a unique career path as a Marine infantry leader, attorney, security professional, and firearms instructor. Looking back, what experiences most shaped the person you are today?
I was lucky to have great leaders throughout my military and security career and those leaders helped me develop into the leader I am today.
2. What first sparked your passion for shooting sports and firearms training, and when did you realize you wanted to turn that passion into a business?
I have been interested in shooting for as long as I can remember. I saw a need in the shooting industry for new shooters to have a welcoming place to become familiar with firearms as well as a need for avid shooters to have the ability to train in real-world scenarios in a safe environment. Wanting to fill this need sparked the desire to elevate my passion into a business.
3. Starting any new business is challenging. What were some of the biggest obstacles you faced in bringing Precision Shooting Center from an idea to its grand opening?
The biggest obstacle was developing a business model that doesn’t have a current business to compare with. Most of what we are doing does not exist in a commercial context as far as we know, so we have had to develop the business model from scratch and learn along the way on what technology and pricing would hopefully be functional and economical for a business to be successful.
4. Many people know you today as the founder of Precision Shooting Center, but what do you hope people in the community learn about you beyond the business itself?
When I am not running the range, I enjoy spending time with my wife and kids who have all been hugely supportive of this crazy endeavor. We love to spend time outdoors whether it be on the water or hiking in the mountains.
5. For readers who haven’t visited yet, how would you describe Precision Shooting Center and what makes it different from a traditional shooting range?
Precision Shooting Center is an indoor simulated training and entertainment facility. It allows you to enjoy shooting and train in a safe environment free from the risks associated with live-fire ranges. It also allows you to practice skills such as drawing from a holster, moving and tactical skillsets that you cannot normally do at a live-fire range.
6. Safety appears to be a major focus of the business. Why was it important to create an environment where people can learn and train without live ammunition?
We have had many family and friends talk with us about wanting to learn to shoot firearms or become more comfortable carrying but they were not comfortable going to a live-fire range. Precision Shooting Center provides a safe environment for shooters of any age and skill level to improve and become more comfortable with firearms.
7. Who do you envision as your ideal customer? Are you primarily serving experienced shooters, first-time firearm owners, families, law enforcement, or a mix of all of those groups?
We have had a wide variety of customers from all walks of life and many different levels of experience in shooting.
8. The grand opening is now behind you. What does success look like for Precision Shooting Center one year from now, and what impact do you hope the business will have on Plymouth and the surrounding communities?
Success, to me, is providing an affordable facility for individuals to train and become better shooters as well as to enjoy the sport of shooting in a fun and safe environment. I hope that overall, this affords people in the community an opportunity to become more aware of their surroundings and have a better knowledge base of firearms and shooting so they are more prepared should they ever need to utilize a firearm in self-defense.
